I am the founder of Baby Signing Mummy. I have been a paediatric nurse for the last 10 years and have worked in a variety of settings such as general paediatrics, special need schools, surgery, paediatric intensive care unit, and children’s allergy. 5 years ago my world changed forever when my beautiful daughter came along, suddenly all those years of training seemed useless, here I was with a perfect little baby – that just cried!

Those first few months were so very hard, with lots of sleepless nights for both her and me! When I discovered baby signing I realized how closely supported it was with Makaton that I had learnt during my training. Finding a local class was a great help to strengthen my signing and I was soon hooked into the world of communicating with my baby.

5 years on and people still comment on how advanced Isabella’s speech and communication is. I truly believe her sentence structure and the words that she uses is purely down to the interaction between us during those early months of signing. The bond between us is something so special that it cannot be put into words, a bond that I believe stems from Isabella knowing that when she couldn’t tell me how she felt she could make me understand through sign language.

I struggled to find basic information on baby signing that was not biased towards a particular company looking for my money and wanting me to join their particular brand of babysigning. I want to change that, I want to put a stop to a culture that prevents an average mummy like me being able to join the world of signing with your baby – it should be open to everyone. I have a passion for baby signing and a want to pass on this amazing experience to other parents and babies.
