The ethos of Baby Signing Mummy is to make communication and interaction a key component in a child’s everyday life.

This starts from birth! I am a huge advocate for talking to babies and telling them about the world around them. To use baby sign language to facilitate this communication gives you a golden opportunity to build on words and sentences.

I have learnt BSL & Makaton and see great advantages to both — my paediatric and child development background leads me to use a mixture of both. I have studied many children and watched their adaptations. This leads me to be in a great position to provide the Baby Signing Mummy Method of baby signing.

How long is the course?

The course is designed to cover a great deal of information over 2 days, it is intensive training, but you will come away from the weekend feeling confident in your knowledge. With entry into the Baby Signing Mummy Guild of Teachers you will have constant access you peer support and mentorship guidance from Louise, the Baby Signing Mummy

Where are the courses held?

For 2011 Baby Signing Mummy is going on tour around the UK. In January the course will be held in the South of England, in June the course will be held in the Midlands, in September the course will be held in the North and November the course will be held in Scotland.

How many times will the course be run in each location?

In 2011 the Baby Signing Mummy Method & Qualification is only running 4 times. The course will run in each location just once.

Do I need to have previous signing experience?

No, not necessarily. If you have heard about baby signing and interested in learning more, the training course will teach you what you need to know to run a successful business. You need to be passionate about working with babies, children and families, and want to teach others. Having signing experience can be a help, but the teaching package starts from the basics, by the end of the 2 day course you will be ready to hold your own class

Is there a demand for Baby Signing in my local area?

There are over 700,000 babies born in the UK each year, so there are more babies than there are signing classes! By checking out the Baby Signing Mummy Map of the UK you can investigate your local area. If there are already classes, make yours the best.

What financial outlay will I have apart from this training course?

By booking onto the business package of the training package you will receive a full resource box that will allow you to start your classes immediately – as time goes on you may wish to add to this resource box. You may find extra puppets that you would like to include or update some books.

You may have hall hire costs to pay out for, however these are only minimal charges. Advertising can be expensive and an extra outlay, however during the course time is spent on effective advertising to ensure that you are not paying out huge amounts. If you do not have a portable stereo/iPod player you will need to purchase one so that you can take music to your lessons! You will also require indemnity insurance.

There is an annual renewal fee to remain part of the Baby Signing Mummy Guild of Teachers and use of the Baby Signing Mummy Approved Practitioner Status. By remaining in the Guild there will be perks and annual conferences to attend.

What would I charge per course?

Charges can vary, you are running your own business so you can charge what you feel is appropriate, taking into account your overheads such as hall hire costs. During the training course you will be helped to perform a competitor analysis which will help you in decisions such as where to hold classes and how much to charge.

How many parents and babies would I have in a class?

Ultimately this would be your decision, though Louise would advise starting small whilst building your confidence. The size of the class will also depend on the space available to you, however an ideal class size is between 12-15 babies.

Will I require a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)?

Yes. Although parents will always be present with their baby, it is good professional practice to have an enhanced CRB check. The current guidelines are that an individual is not able to apply for their own individual CRB, if running classes through Children Centre’s they can apply for the CRB for you. Baby Signing Mummy will require you to apply for your Enhanced CRB through the company and this may incur at £50 administration fee from the CRB themselves.

How much is the training package?

There are two main packages offered by Louise, and there is always an opportunity to discuss payment plans with Louise. The package is competitively priced. The basic package starts from just £4500 and further breakdown can be received by contacting Louise.

How do I secure/book a place on one of the training courses?

A £500 deposit is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 1 month prior to the commencement of the course. At the time of booking, a license agreement is sent to you for signing and must be returned within 1 week of booking.
