Ever wondered what your 7 month old keeps pointing out of the window at? Why your 9 month old squeals when the cat run’s past? Or why your 14 month old drags you off around the shops pointing and grunting at things? Your baby is trying to talk to you but they haven’t learnt the words yet.
By repetitively signing with them from 5 months (younger if you wish) your baby will learn that certain gestures mean something and will start to mimic your movements, this should be encouraged as your baby is starting to talk to you!
Whether you have been signing with your baby since birth, or whether you are wanting to know whether your baby is ready to join a baby signing class ask yourself these questions:
- Is your baby clapping and waving?
- Is your baby gazing into your face as you talk to them?
- Is your baby giggling at your actions?
- Is your baby excited and wanting more interaction with you?
If you answer yes to any or all of these questions your baby is taking everything in and learning, as long as you remain consistent and always say the word aloud while you sign, it won’t be long before the two of you are chatting away in your own language.
Have you used babysigning with your baby/child - I want to hear about it! These pages are for stories from parents about the wonders and whys to babysign.
Send me in a small bio of your baby-signing journey and the best will be put on my website for others to read! Some may even feature in articles I am writing for publications. If you would be interested email me or catch me on Twitter
